In 1959, CSD Credit Union was formed to provide the employees of CSD-1 (Hickman Mills School District) with an alternative to traditional for-profit banking institutions. The first organizational meeting of the Credit Union was held in the Ruskin Cafeteria March 19th, 1959. The meeting was conducted by J. Reigal of the Missouri Credit Union League and John Thiel, teacher at Truman and first treasurer. The committee which signed the founding charter was composed of: J. Nesbit, Acting Superintendent, G. Hamby, teacher at Truman, J. Jones, teacher at Symington, A. Richey, teacher at Westridge, D. Maupin, teacher at Burke, C. Maupin and A. Powell, both teachers at Ruskin. Mr. Nesbit suggested the name CSD-1 Credit Union. G. Hamby became passbook holder number one and he also contributed the $5 charter fee.
Assets at the end of the first month were $534 and have grown in excess of $40 million today. Providing competitive rates and unmatched personal service, the credit union grew quickly to be one of the strongest in the state of Missouri.
The Credit Union conducted business from the homes of its first two treasurers. Facilities were rented in the basement of the Hickman Mills Clinic at 113th and Hickman Mills Drive and were shared with CTA (HMUTA). In 1971, John Thiel negotiated the purchase of the facility located at 7000 E 107th Street for the Credit Union for $23,400.
Tony DiGiovanni was hired as the Credit Union President in 1980. John and Tony negotiated the purchase of our present location at 8510 E Bannister Road in October of 1990. The branch underwent an extensive remodel and expansion in 2001.
The Credit Union currently has over 3500 members located in 36 states. Due to technology such as online banking, mobile deposits, ATM and Shared Branching networks, members can transact business on their CSDCU accounts wherever they live or work. Total outstanding loan balances to our members is currently over $20 million.
The Credit Union has grown our field of membership to now include staff and students of Hickman Mills School District, Grandview School District, Raymore-Peculiar School District, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School, St. Regis, Blue Ridge Christian School, Grandview Christian School, Calvary Bible College and all Metropolitan Community College campuses. Family members of current members can also enjoy the many benefits of becoming a CSDCU member.
Unlike other financial institutions, CSD Credit Union is owned and operated by its members. The traditional credit union motto of "People Helping People" is what we're all about. Because we are a member-owned financial cooperative and members make up the Board of Directors with no outside stockholders, our savings and loan rates are very often the best available.
Deposits are insured up to $250,000 by NCUA (National Credit Union Association), the strongest deposit-insuring agency of the United States federal government.
To open your membership at CSD Credit Union, all you need to do is open a share (savings) account with a minimum deposit of $10.00.
